Invented Spelling: Your Child’s First Writing

(gentle music) – [Narrator] Parents are
often concerned about young children’s attempts at spelling. When a young preschool and
kindergarten aged child spells, he is showing you what he
knows about phonemic awareness. This is him telling you
what sounds he hears which is valuable information
when it comes to reading. We wanna point out that kid
spelling or invented spelling represents their understanding of sounds. If the sounds are close,
that’s a great sign. For example, I woch the fbl gam for I watched the football game is an excellent example
of invented spelling. This also is an indication that your child is building their reading
and writing skills. At the end of first grade,
and in second grade, they will begin to correct their spelling. (gentle music)
